Discovery Garden
Evacuation Procedure
If the fire alarm sounds in the buildings around Discovery Garden, all participants must immediately stop their activities and proceed to the assembly point. The assembly point is located in front of the storage containers near the main entrance. Use the footpath between the main building and Giggles and Squiggles. Be cautious of the road, as it is the route for emergency vehicles.
The session lead will ensure the fire exit to the garden is closed and will conduct a headcount, comparing it to the attendance record to ensure everyone is accounted for.
Alternative Exit: In the unlikely event the footpath is blocked, the key to open the back vehicle gate can be found in the tool shed. Use this gate to exit via Columbia Way, following the footpath back around to the front of the Discovery Building.
A Freebridge Fire Warden will inform us when it is safe to return to the garden.
Slips, Trips, and Falls
The paths around Discovery Garden are uneven. To avoid trips, please wear sturdy, ankle-supporting footwear, with no open-toed shoes. Be mindful of roots, uneven ground, and any tools or objects left on the ground that could pose a tripping hazard.
Cuts, Prickles, Irritants and Toxins
Be cautious of plants such as reeds, which can cut skin, and spiky plants like roses, brambles, and thistles. Stinging nettles can cause irritation. Certain plants, including lords-and-ladies, foxgloves, fungi, and euphorbias, are toxic if ingested or can irritate the skin. Please ask for assistance if you're unsure about a plant.
Bees, wasps, horseflies, and gnats may sting if threatened, so it's advisable to keep skin covered. Always wear gloves while working with soil to prevent infection, including tetanus. It's your responsibility to ensure you're up to date with tetanus vaccinations.
Hot Weather
In hot weather, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Wear a sun hat and light-colored, loose clothing to protect your skin from the sun. Apply appropriate sunscreen for your skin type, and avoid working in direct sunlight for long periods. Take breaks and seek shade when necessary.
In extreme heat, be mindful that metal objects exposed to the sun can become very hot. Ask the session lead if you're unsure about safety precautions.
Cold Weather
Dress warmly in multiple layers, wear sturdy footwear, and use a hat and scarf. Keep active to stay warm and take breaks by the fire when needed. Be cautious around the fire to avoid burns.
Windy Weather
In strong winds, avoid standing near objects that may fall or attempting to carry items that could be blown away. Stay sheltered and avoid creating small particulates that could blow into someone’s eyes.
Using Hand Tools
Hand tools in the garden are sharp and can cut or puncture the skin. Use tools responsibly and do not play with them. Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and sturdy footwear. If unsure about tool usage, ask the session lead for guidance.
Fire Safety
Discovery Garden uses a wood-fired chiminea. Only tend the fire if authorized by the session lead. Burn only suitable wood or charcoal, and wear appropriate gloves. If burned, cool the area under cold water for at least 10 minutes.
An authorised person must supervise the fire to ensure safety and control. Once the fire is out, remind others that it may still be hot. Keep items and people away from the fire, and ensure it is safely positioned to avoid accidents. Be aware of the fire extinguisher and fire blanket locations. Monthly checks are conducted to ensure they are functional.
First Aid
The session lead will provide first aid if necessary. Record all accidents in the accident book located on the right-hand side bench in the tool shed. If any items are used from the first aid kit, notify the session lead to ensure they are replaced.
